Case Study 5
Expats in Taiwan, previous vasectomy, TESA, IVF_ICSI, twin precnancy
Mr and Mrs D have been married for 8 years and were living in Taiwan where Mr D was posted by his company. Due to his vasectomy (male sterilization), he knows that he needs special treatment in order to have a child.
They consulted doctors in Taiwan and continued to seek for the best treatment possible to fulfill their wish. Mr D surfed the internet for facilities and treatment options and found information on Thomson Fertility Centre and other fertility centres in Singapore.
He posted questions to each centre and was really glad when Dr Cheng Li Chang, Medical Director of Thomson Fertility Centre, replied to him! They communicated over the internet for a while, Dr Cheng never failed to answer all their queries and the Mr and Mrs D decided that Dr Cheng was the doctor who could help them.
Mr D flew to Singapore in July to consult Dr Cheng and an urologist. The plan was to extract live sperm during MESA or TESA procedure (a surgical operation to extract sperm) and freeze them for his wife’s IVF/ICSI treatment cycle in September.
The couple flew to Singapore again in September and Mrs D was put on hormone treatment for 8 days. Two days later, the egg collection procedure was performed and 3 embryos transferred into Mrs D’s womb 3 days later.
A month later, Mrs D was tested positive in a pregnancy test and that she would be expecting twins.
Mr D did not want to bear the medical risk of having his wife back in Taiwan for the next 2 trimesters before the children are born. He trusted Dr Cheng and his staff and wanted his wife to be near them during the term of her pregnancy. Mrs D thus stayed in Singapore and Mr K made trips to see his wife every 2 weeks.
They are now proud parents of two active boys.
